Your Mayor

~May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace! May your troubles grow less as your blessings increase!~

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity's most widely known figures. But for all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling.

It has long been recounted that, during his mission in Ireland, St. Patrick once stood on a hilltop (which is now called Croagh Patrick), and with only a wooden staff by his side, banished all the snakes from Ireland.

In fact, the island nation was never home to any snakes. The "banishing of the snakes" was really a metaphor for the eradication of pagan ideology from Ireland and the triumph of Christianity. Within two hundred years of Patrick's arrival, Ireland was completely Christianized.

It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 A.D. Although his father was a Christian deacon, it has been suggested that he probably took on the role because of tax incentives and there is no evidence that Patrick came from a particularly religious family. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. (There is some dispute over where this captivity took place. Although many believe he was taken to live in Mount Slemish in County Antrim, it is more likely that he was held in County Mayo near Killala.) During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. (It is also believed that Patrick first began to dream of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity.)

After more than six years as a prisoner, Patrick escaped. According to his writing, a voice-which he believed to be God's-spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland.

To do so, Patrick walked nearly 200 miles from County Mayo, where it is believed he was held, to the Irish coast. After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he experienced a second revelation-an angel in a dream tells him to return to Ireland as a missionary. Soon after, Patrick began religious training, a course of study that lasted more than fifteen years. After his ordination as a priest, he was sent to Ireland with a dual mission-to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish. (Interestingly, this mission contradicts the widely held notion that Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland.)

Familiar with the Irish language and culture, Patrick chose to incorporate traditional ritual into his lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to eradicate native Irish beliefs. For instance, he used bonfires to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire. He also superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what is now called a Celtic cross, so that veneration of the symbol would seem more natural to the Irish. (Although there were a small number of Christians on the island when Patrick arrived, most Irish practiced a nature-based pagan religion. The Irish culture centered around a rich tradition of oral legend and myth. When this is considered, it is no surprise that the story of Patrick's life became exaggerated over the centuries-spinning exciting tales to remember history has always been a part of the Irish way of life.)

~May your blessings outnumber
The Shamrocks that grow.
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.~

So with St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner you might be thinking of shamrocks, leprechauns and pots of gold, but of course Joe is thinking of beer. Irish beer!

Ireland has had a long history of brewing fine ales and even lagers later on, but it is most renowned for the brewing a special type of ale, the stout. Stouts evolved from an earlier brew known as a Porter, so named after the dock workers who were so fond of the drink.

Guinness stout, perhaps the best known stout in the world, was founded in Dublin by Arthur Guinness in 1759. His original brewery in Dublin, secured with a 9,000 year lease, still uses the same Irish spring water today as it did then. It is the heavy chemical composition of this water that helps lend Guinness stout some of its fine qualities. It’s also said that Guinness roasts its hops to provide other distinctive flavors, but of course the actual recipe is a closely guarded industrial secret. Perhaps with enough ‘research’ the secrets will be unveiled.

Guinness stout looks black in the glass, but under direct bright light you’ll see that it’s actually red in color. In fact, Irish red ale, like stout, has its own beer style in many major beer judging circles. The red color is achieved by adding small amounts of dark or roasted grains. These types of beers are very malty with low hop profiles and little to no hop aroma at all. After all, hops are not indigenous to Ireland and didn’t even begin to gain favour in Europe until the 15th century! Even as the popularity of hopped beers rose in mainland Europe, England was resistant to it use and Ireland was last to adopt the noble cone.

Today Ireland is still known as the stout capital of the world but its consumption is dropping in Ireland. Lager is now the most popular beer consumed but Guinness holds the crown as the most popular all-time beverage in the Emerald Isle. Other popular breweries include Beamish, Smithwick’s, Murphy’s, and many more.

So keep in mind that if you really want to celebrate the great beers of Ireland this St. Paddy’s Day, leave the green food coloring at home. If you add it to a nice Irish Red, you’ll destroy that ruby color and get a horrible jaundice brew, and if you add it to a stout, well, nothing at all will happen.

Prost!

(By the way, you homebrewers mustn’t forget to brew up your Marzen this month so you can lager it until late September for Oktoberfest!)

When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.

So, let’s all get drunk, and go to heaven!~

International Women's Day Is On March 8th

In the year 1908 women's oppression and inequality was driving women to become more vocal and begin to campaign for changes. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

In the year1909 in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

Then in 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named a Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. Every year in every country there would be a celebration on the same day. A Woman’s day for her to make her demands known. It was agreed on and accepted . Thus International Women's Day was the result.

In 1911 following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1910, International Women's Day (IWD) was honored the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic 'Triangle Fire' in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labor legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women's Day events.

On to 1913-1914. On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913 following discussions, International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Women’s Day ever since. In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women's rights. On the last Sunday of February in 1917, Russian women began a strike for "bread and peace" in response to the death over 2 million Russian soldiers in war. Opposed by political leaders the women continued to strike. Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The date the women's strike commenced was Sunday 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia. This day on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere was 8 March.

Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries. For decades, IWD has grown from strength to strength annually. For many years the United Nations has held an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women's rights and participation in social, political and economic processes. 1975 was designated as 'International Women's Year by the United Nations. Women's organizations and governments around the world have also observed IWD annually on 8 March by holding large-scale events that honor women's advancement. A reminder required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life.

Today IWD is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honoring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day.

So this March 8th remember that special woman in your life!

~Irish Diplomacy: The ability to tell someone to go to hell and make them look forward to the trip!~

Dear Dr Phyllis

I am 37 yrs old, have been married for 15 years and have two children with my husband. My problem is that I haven't been in love with him for years. I have told him that we need to divorce. I left him for a year, but came back due to financial reasons but he keeps telling me that he loves me and begs me not to leave him.
Desperate in Delaware..

Dear Desperate.

Well aren't you the poor little princess. You came back for finacial reasons? Shame on you. If you are that unhappy get out, get off your ass and get a job to support yourself.. Oh and leave the kids with him. What?... You thought that loving feeling with the stars and the fireworks lasts for ever? Leave the poor bastard so he can start anew and give the love he has for you to someone who deserves it.
Dr Phyllis..

***********

Dear Dr Phyllis
I cannot figure out what my calling is or what I am supposed to be doing with my life. I have tried everything like accounting, literature, computers. I have lost track by now. Sometimes I feel so lost I get depressed and don't want to work at all. I just don't understand why life is so complicated? Why aren't we told what we are supposed to be doing so we don't flounder around? How do we find this out?
Lost in Landmark.

Dear Lost
If you knew the answers to everything, you'd be sitting at my desk now wouldn't you? Besides you probably should have listened to your mother in the first place. I'm sure she has ideas!

Try something working with people one on one..Especially old people. They can be a wealth of information, and you can learn lots from them. Volunteer at an old folks home. Life won't seem so complicated once you've been there.

If old folks don't do it for you do something totally out of character. sky diving, belly dancing, greased pig wrestling.. Now those kind of things make you appreciate a desk job!
Dr Phyllis..

The Leprechaun

The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is "lobaircin," meaning "small-bodied fellow."

Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Though only minor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their much-fabled treasure.

Leprechauns had nothing to do with St. Patrick or the celebration of St. Patrick's Day, a Catholic holy day. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called Darby O'Gill & the Little People, which introduced America to a very different sort of leprechaun than the cantankerous little man of Irish folklore. This cheerful, friendly leprechaun is a purely American invention, but has quickly evolved into an easily recognizable symbol of both St. Patrick's Day and Ireland in general.

~If you’re enough lucky to be Irish...
You’re lucky enough!~

Celtic dominance once extended across Ireland and much of Western Europe. It was the Druids (Celtic priests) who elevated four leaf clovers to the status of Celtic charms, allegedly potent against malevolent spirits. Their status as Celtic charms is the origin of the modern belief in their power to bestow good luck.

The leaves of four leaf clovers are sometimes said to stand for faith, hope, love, and luck. Of course you may also know the old tune..

I'm looking over a four-leaf clover
That I overlooked before.
One leaf is sunshine, the second is rain,
Third is the roses that grow in the lane.
No need explaining the one remaining
Is somebody I adore.
I'm looking over a four-leaf clover
That I overlooked before.

The first literary reference to draw on the tradition of four leaf clovers as Celtic charms seems to have been made in 1620. In that year, according to the University of Illinois, Sir John Melton wrote, "If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing." It is estimated that, on average, there are 10,000 three leaf clovers for every instance of a true four leaf clover.

Irish Aran Sweaters

The Aran Sweater takes its name from the set of islands where it originated many generations ago, off the West coast of Ireland. The Aran Islands lie at the mouth of Galway Bay, on the Atlantic Sea. The Islanders were made up of fishermen and farmers. The Aran Sweater was born of this environment, passed down from generation to generation, and has since become the ultimate symbol of Irish heritage.

As a craft, the Irish hand knit sweater continues to fascinate audiences around the world. A finished sweater contains approximately 100,000 carefully constructed stitches, and can take the knitter up to sixty days to complete. It can contain any combination of stitches, depending on the particular clan pattern being followed. Many of the stitches used in the Aran Sweater are reflective of Celtic Art, and comparisons have been drawn between the stitches and patterns found at Neolithic burial sites such as New Grange in Co. Meath. Each stitch carries its own unique meaning, a historic legacy from the lives of the Island community many years ago.

The Cable Stitch is a depiction of the fisherman's ropes, and represents a wish for a fruitful day at sea. The Diamond Stitch reflects the small fields of the islands. These diamonds are sometimes filled with Irish moss stitch, depicting the seaweed that was used to fertilize the barren fields and produce a good harvest. Hence the diamond stitch is a wish for success and wealth. The Zig Zag Stitch, a half diamond, is often used in the Aran Sweaters, and popularly represents the twisting cliff paths on the islands. The Tree of Life is one of the original stitches, and is unique to the earliest examples of the Aran knitwear. It again reflects the importance of the clan, and is an expression of a desire for clan unity, with long-lived parents and strong children . The names of the traditional stitches write their own poem: blackberry, diamond, honeycomb, moss, lobster claw, ladder, plait, bobble, link, basketweave, tree of life. There are almost two dozen, and the combinations are infinite. Patterns known as the Ladder of Life and Holy Trinity have obvious religious links. Others talk more to life's experiences, e.g. the Double Zigzags relate to the trials and tribulations of married life while the Tree of Life tells of hope that a fisherman will have long life and sons to carry on his work.

From its origins, the sweater has been intimately linked to clans and their identities. The many combinations of stitches seen on these Irish hand knit sweaters are not incidental, far from it. They can impart vast amounts of information to those who know how to interpret them. The sweaters were, and remain, a reflection of the lives of the knitters, and their families. On the islands, patterns were zealously guarded, kept within the same clan throughout generations. They were often used to help identify bodies of fishermen washed up on the beach following an accident at sea. An official register of these historic patterns has been compiled, and can be seen in the Aran Sweater Museum on the Aran Islands.

There are two important elements that set a traditional Aran knit apart from all others. The first is the yarn itself. A proper Aran knit is made with a rough, cream-colored wool, known as bainin (pronounced bawneen). The yarn comes from sheep who have coats that protect them from the rugged weather. When the wool is spun and prepared for knitting, part of the oil is left in the wool; as a result, it has both water-resistant and insulating properties. When knit with the twists and turns of the close knit Aran style, the final garment has tiny air pockets that help to insulate the wearer from the cold air. In fact, when moist, the garment actually gives off heat.

The Aran Sweater remains an item of timeless beauty, synonymous with pride in an Irish heritage.

Spring Equinox

The spring equinox also known as the vernal equinox or March equinox, is the precise point in the year when the earth's axis is tilting neither towards nor away from the sun and it is directly above the equator. This makes the time that the sun spends below and above the horizon equal. In fact the word equinox is the combination of the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night) which means to us on earth that day and night will be exactly equal. For the spring equinox, the sun is progressing northwards, for our friends in the southern hemisphere this will all be the other way round.

The date of the spring equinox is not the same every year, due to the fact that a year actually has 365.25 days in it, and we need a leap year every 4 years to ensure that our dates remain consistent with our seasons. This means that the spring equinox will fall on either 20th or 21st March.

Christians and Pagans share some very similar rituals. The primary Pagan Goddess to be worshiped during the Spring Equinox was called Ostara, or Oestra which is where we get the word Easter from.

Ostara was a powerful Goddess who represented life and fertility. Her main symbols were eggs (for new beginnings) and hares that symbolize new life.

Ostara is always to be celebrated with a feast but another tradition that is still maintained in some parts of the world is egg painting. Eggs were either hard boiled or emptied and then painted brightly for decoration, carried through the streets by young children and often eaten on the day.

If you would like to enjoy the celebration of the Spring Equinox in your home light some incense associated with Ostara such as cinnamon, nutmeg or frankincense. Sacred gemstones at this time are amethyst, aquamarine, red jasper and bloodstone, preferably egg shaped.

Blessed be.

~Better fifty enemies outside the house than one within~

Your Horoscopes for March, 2009.

Aries: At this time you may feel out of your element or out of sync with yourself or your surroundings. Interference from others requires adjustment and perhaps sacrifice on your part. What you have to offer or want to do doesn't mesh well with what seems to be necessary. While not a full blown crisis, it is a time of strain and tension, which can be somewhat debilitating to your health. A partial retreat in order not to deplete yourself and your strength is beneficial right now. You may be upstaged by other people or events which occur now.

Taurus: Much of your emotional fulfillment comes from work or career achievements at this time. You may have an increased awareness of your inner motivations and can commit yourself to accomplishing any personal projects or aims that you set your sights on. You put your heart and effort into all you undertake and find purpose and meaning in your assignments. Women can be very helpful to you now, and you find comfort in knowing they approve and support your intentions. In a personal relationship, you might feel more dedicated and devoted to your partner. You can easily focus on your mate's emotional needs and desires and are happily obliged to set aside time for domestic relations.

Gemini: This can be a rewarding time, when you are aroused with inspiration and a creative flow of energy. If you are an artist, inventor, teacher or in some other creative field, this can signify a period when your accomplishments prove advantageous for you. It is easier to receive assistance from those in authority or your superiors. There may be a male acquaintance who is especially helpful to you during this period.

Cancer: The pace of your life and your rhythms quicken and become erratic, unstable, and restless. If you have been suppressing yourself, toeing the line, at this time you will burst out of any restrictions. Impatience, an urge to make radical departures from the status quo, and/or unexpected events in your life compel you to do many things differently. Freedom and independence beckon, but in such a way as to create some schism or at least a high degree of tension within you. If your own or your family's medical history indicates cardiac problems, be especially aware of those indicators and warning signs now. This is not to say heart problems will inevitably occur, simply that those tendencies increase with this new freedom in your life style.

Leo: Bonds of affection strengthen in your romantic or marital partnership. The relationship with your mate is mutually supportive and encourages you both to see each other as unique and special individuals. You share mutual trust, devotion and admiration as a couple and are secure in the understanding that your partner will be at your side through thick and thin. There is a likelihood that a deeper commitment will take place in your relationship. Or if you are without a "significant other", a brand new attraction may come into your life, and you might form a alliance based on complementary personalities and mutual interests.

Virgo: You will want to share pleasurable activities with your mate or marriage partner during this time. Entertainment plans, such as going to the theater or a special night out on the town together, would be appealing to you now. This period also promotes feelings of loyalty, love, and contentment toward your loved one. When you lavish your attention on your mate, you most likely will receive a warm and affectionate response. With a fresh, playful approach you can enliven your marriage or a significant relationship at this time.

Libra: Thoughts turn to parenting, nurturing, and providing assistance to those you love and care about. You may have a great deal of contact and communication with family members, relatives, and siblings at this time, in greater part because they need guidance, advice, or help. This is a good period to make schedules or arrangements with those who live with you as to the handling of domestic or personal responsibilities. Meaningful conversations with your children or mate can open new doors to understanding their particular needs.

Scorpio: This is a favorable period for success in all your creative and imaginative pursuits. You receive cooperation through your association with others in business, relationships, and professional partnerships. This is a fertile time for artistic endeavors and inventive creations. Your innate talents rise to the surface and you feel comfortable in expressing them to the world. You can experience contentment and positive relations in your romantic life and benefit from the joint activities you share with others.

Sagittarius: Sharing your thoughts and ideas with your mate or marriage partner is rewarding to you now. A blending of similar interests and attitudes can help establish closer ties between you and your mate. In an ongoing relationship, pledges of love, commitment, and loyalty can be exchanged, or you can have a meaningful conversation which brings renewed vows. You or your loved one may be especially revealing with regard to affectionate feelings and open communications. Carrying out day to day routines and obligations with your companion should also prove more pleasant during this period. You may even receive an invitation or news of a wedding, birth, party, or engagement now.

Capricorn: This is an excellent time for home improvements, particularly those which enhance the appearance and beauty of your living space. Decorating or rearranging furniture in order to create a more harmonious and pleasing arrangement is favored. Relationships with your family are very satisfying and loving, and you may also wish to invite company into your home. The role of gracious host or hostess suits you very well right now.

Aquarius: This period favors business travel, legal work and professional activities within your work environment. You may take on more duties at work and have meaningful contact with higher-ups and professionals in your organization. At this time, you put your faith and trust in hard work and determination to accomplish your ideals and aspirations. Utilizing your knowledge, planning ahead, and making the most of opportunities will be of most concern to you. Overall, this should be a lucky and expansive period for work, as well as a beneficial time to become involved in educational, religious or travel pursuits. In your personal relationships, you will need the devotion and support of your mate and other loved ones, provided they allow you the liberty to indulge as much as you wish in your work or other area of interest.

Pisces: Teamwork and cooperation in your romantic and social life is highlighted now. Love relationships and friendships are kept on an even keel by demonstrating patience and diplomacy during this time. Your leisure activities may change for the better or will most likely be more interesting than they have previously been. This period can be a stimulus to creative work or thoughts. You may also win the support of someone who can benefit you financially or in a particular area of talent or expertise you possess. Combining your creative abilities or intellectual ideas with others can result in a moneymaking enterprise or fortunate partnership for you.

Thanks folks for this months contributions!

Just a reminder. We are always looking for contributors. You do NOT have to be a member of Rosewillow (although membership is completely free and we're a great bunch of folks!). Anyone is more than welcome to send in something of interest for the paper. Ask a friend or family member if they have something you think maybe of interest to our readers.

There’s a few things we would like to cover for Aprils Edition. If you would like to take one of the following events on don’t hesitate to ask! If you have one of your own you'd like to promote that's good too!

Check out some April happenings listed at http://www.brownielocks.com/april.html I'm sure there'll be a few topics you might be interested in writing about.

Any Questions, comments, complaints can also be left in the Oracle's Forum too don't forget. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
