The Importance of Detoxification:

Last month we asked if you were Toxic. If you answered yes to those questions then perhaps this information will come in handy.

This concept isn’t new, detoxification has been in existence for eons; used by many cultures around the world, cleansing the body by fasting or a blend of various herbs to eliminate toxins from the colon. Including the ancient healing systems of Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. What is detoxification exactly? It’s the process of eliminating toxins that have accumulated in the body due to over indulgence and environmental factors. Toxins stored in the liver can accumulate to such a degree that it overwhelms the liver resulting in an overload that leads to inflammation--which can result in chronic disease--a problem affecting more than 90,000,000 people in the USA.

By way of nature, our bodies are equipped with an innate detoxification process including seven channels of elimination. The liver, skin, lungs, colon, blood and the lymphatic systems, yet due to the process of living this usually efficient body works can become compromised and sluggish---in order to get it back into tip top working condition--there are several natural remedies on hand ready to assist.

Most holistic health practitioners recommend detoxification of the body at least once a year---this can be done anytime during the year, but Spring and the Fall are often recommended as the most productive.

Ways to Detoxify the body:

(1.) Cut down or eliminate sugar, fats, and salt from the diet for several days---eat more fiber by way of whole grains, like brown rice, oats, whole wheat products. Consume at least 9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables--raw or lightly steamed daily. AND seaweed is especially good for detoxification.

A very beneficial meal {Kichadi} for a short duration two to three days kick-starts the detoxification often recommended by Ayurveda practitioners.

This dish is a potent blood purifier.

½ cup basmati rice
¼ cup split mung dai
½ burdock root, about 8 inches
1 ½ cup green beans
2 tablespoons ghee
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 stick kombu
6- 10 cups water
½ teaspoon coriander powder

(2.) Cleanse and protect the liver by using a blend of herbs----milk thistle, artichoke, dandelion and turmeric, a bright golden powdered spice that assists in the digestion of protein you can find in the spice section of the supermarkets. Also to be used daily but especially during a cleanse is triphala---a powerful Ayurvedic herbal combination that promotes rejuvenation and elimination.

(3.)Take time to deep breath. Most people don’t know how to breath properly, nor do they practice deep breathing. As you take deep breaths the stomach expands filling the lungs to capacity---in such a way organs through out the body receive a fresh supply of oxygen. As you exhale toxins are purged by way of the lungs, also increasing the flow of lymph, which further eliminates toxins. Several five minute intervals of deep breathing, throughout the day assists the detoxification process greatly.

(4.) Considering the skin is the largest organ of elimination….dry brush your skin twice a day---first thing in the morning and again at bedtime. Use a natural bristle brush [which can be purchased at a health store]. Starting at the soles of your feet using rotary motions cover the entire body until the skin is rosy and glowing. This effectively gets rids of dead skin that accumulates, opening pores, making it easier to eliminate toxins. It has a rejuvenating effect on the nervous system as it stimulates nerve endings, hormones and oil producing glands plus enhances circulation. Dry brushing is great during the detoxification period, but also a good practice to get into daily----

(5.) Exercise---when going through the detoxification exercise can be very beneficial. But make it light as the body is utilizing additional energy to eliminate toxins. Yoga, qigong----strolling, mini trampoline jumping for short durations is especially beneficial for draining the lymphatic system.

(6.) Be sure and drink enough water----to flush out the toxins through the kidneys removing waste products from the blood. Many practitioners recommend 2 quarts of water daily.

(7.) Rest is essential during detoxification-----plus positive visualizations. Take a mini-vacation away for the hustle and bustle of living. If you’re unable to travel to a health spa make one at home. Put on soothing music---get a massage if possible. Light candles and take luxurious baths with healing aromatherapy oils, like lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile, peppermint ~! Happy Detox!

And of course remember to consult your doctor before undertaking any health treatment. Including herbal supplements and natural remedies. This information is for educational purposes only.

What are Hops you ask?

The headline in last months paper was "Hops shortage spiking up beer prices!" Some folks may not realize just how important this plant is to the beer making industry. Here's a bit about the importance of hops in our beer brewing industry.

Hops, or rather, humulus lupulus, are perhaps the least understood of all the components of beer. Modern popular lagers from breweries such as Budweiser, Molson, and Labatt’s, tend to produce a beer that is heavy in adjuncts (rice, corn) that suppress the maltiness of the beer that the bitterness of the hops is intended to offset. As a result, these breweries tend to produce beers that that are low in hops additions, both bittering and flavor as well as aroma.

One only need sample a few of the finer ales to gain a rudimentary understanding of the role of hops in beer. One of the better known import ales is the Guinness brand of stout. A stout by style does not contain any flavor or aroma hops but uses the hops solely as a bittering agent. By happenstance, the hop flower releases its bitterness from the lupulin gland by boiling for at least an hour. Therefore, to brew a stout such as Guinness, one simply adds the entire hop bill at the beginning of the one hour boil.

So how do we get those wonderful flavors and aromas from this incredible plant? We simply add them at different times in the boil. For instance, the first quality to be lost is the aroma of the hop. Therefore we add aroma hops a few minutes before the end of the boil or at flame out. If we want flavor, we add them with thirty minutes left in the boil. It’s as simple as that. Well, kind of.

Mankind has been growing hops for hundreds of years. Can you think of anything that has remained constant and consistent after having been so valuable to man for so long? Hops are no exception. Every country that has embraced the elixir has cultivated its own strains. As a result there are hundreds of different varieties, each valued for its own particular properties.

When selecting a hop to add early in the boil for bittering purposes, one needs to know the alpha acid content. This is an indication of how much bittering, known as IBU (international bittering unit), the hop will impart to the beer. A properly balanced beer will have just enough bittering to offset the sweetness of the malt. Since alpha acids vary anywhere from 2% to 20%, it’s vital to know what the content of your hops is so that you don’t under or over hop your brew.

There is still one more method of utilizing hops in beer, know as the dry hop. With this technique the hops are added to the secondary fermenter, more accurately called a clearing tank, after the fermentation is complete. The hops are left in the clearing tank for about a week and a wonderful spicy, floral bouquet remains.

With the current hop shortage crisis there is now an explosion of homebrewers and breweries alike planting their own crops of hops. Even if you don’t care for beer, the fast growing and attractive hop bine (not a typo. Hop vines are called bines.) is a common addition to many gardens. But we’ll leave that for another discussion.

Prost!
No shortage of Beer or Hops over at Joe's Pool Room Come for a visit!

Our Featured Artist Of The Month!

You may know her as Helen or you may know her as Audrey but did you know just how talented this lady is? She's been gracious enough to be our very first Artist of the month here at the RoseWillow Arts & Craft Guild. Audrey has explained a bit about her hobby below. Click the beautiful photo's to see a larger picture.

HI, my name is Audrey and I'm from Buckinghamshire, England. I am going to tell you about my hobby of decorating eggs in the style of Fabergé.

I first saw a display of these beautiful eggs about 8 years ago, when I visited Sugarcraft* show with my sister. The Egg Crafters' Guild of Great Britain had a stand at the show and I was intrigued by the display of eggs, thinking I would love to have a go at making some. So, I began practicing on hens eggs, cutting them carefully with a sharp craft knife, then painting and decorating them with bits of lace and beads or sequins. Later I bought a drill with different size diamond cutters, found a supplier of goose eggs, and another supplier of all the paints, glues, miniatures and findings, and I was hooked! My first attempts were not very wonderful, and although others admired them, I knew I had a lot to learn.

I eventually joined the Guild and found a host of information, hints and tips, in the quarterly magazine. So I began crafting away on my own, learning much by trial and error! Later, once a year, I attended a week-end seminar and made the beautiful Rhea Eggs under the instruction of a wonderful creative teacher.

Although I can take credit for making these eggs, I give all the credit to her for the designs. Now I design any that I make myself, depending on the occasion being celebrated or the interests of the person I will be giving it too.

I have only ever sold a few as they are quite expensive to make and I don't like to ask people to pay the true cost, so mostly they are given as gifts for friends or relations. I did sell two Ostrich egg clocks after mine was admired, but had to charge £60 ( approx $121.49 CDN) each to cover my costs. A blown Ostrich shell can be up to £15,(approx $30.37 CDN) before I start adding the cost of the clock, the stand, rhinestone and pearl chain and the findings, paints etc. A decorated goose egg would cost between £15 (approx $30.37 CDN) to £25 ,(approx $50.62 CDN) to make, but in the shops, would be double that! Ostrich Egg clock

Anyone interested in taking up the hobby would need to buy a small craft drill for cutting, masks are essential while cutting, epoxy glue for fixing the egg to the stand, Aleens tacky glue for adding the braids and rhinestones, a good selection of fine acrylic craft paints, fine coloured glitter, good quality paint brushes and any odd scraps of satin or silk materials for lining. Most of these items, plus the stands, cords and findings can usually be bought from a good supplier on line. An egg marker is a useful item if you are not confident to mark your patterns freehand.

To begin, make sure your egg is clean and any rough bits rubbed down with fine sandpaper. Mark an oval or whatever shape you wish to cut out, then, wearing your mask, carefully cut out the piece of shell. Paint the inside with any white undercoat or whatever you have to hand. Dry with a hairdryer. Now, paint the outside, giving several thin coats of paint until you are satisfied with the finish. Dry each coat with the hairdryer. To line the egg, cut a longish strip of material, sew the ends together and gather one side up into a 'dolly bag'. Brush some tacky glue on the inside of the egg and slip the lining in, gently pressing it to the edges. Trim any surplus material off and then braid around the inside edge.

Now you can begin decorating. Braid around the outside cut edge, several narrow gold braids looks nice. Add any transfers, filigrees or flowers, whatever you prefer. Place a small item or figurine inside, glue in if necessary. Mix up the epoxy resin and glue the egg to the stand. Hold it in place while it sets, 5 minutes or so. If you wish you can then glue the stand to a suitably decorated base. Now, sit back and admire your handiwork!

When you get more proficient, you can buy small musical movements and lighting sets to add to your eggs. My favourite egg, the Japanese Rhea Egg, has a small hens egg inside, made into a lantern with a light inside that. The Rhea egg with the orchids on had a music box in the bottom of the egg. All the flowers and hummingbird etc. on the rhea eggs are cold porcelain, hand made,
then painted, left to dry out for 24 hours, then assembled and added to the egg.

Another form of decorating is to cut and hinge the egg to form a casket, suitable for adding a small gift to. I am always on the look out for small items, suitable for using for decoration or placing inside the egg.

The most recent egg I have just finished is a Ruby Wedding Anniversary Egg and I have several more in the pipeline that I have been asked to do, so now I will have to get cracking!! Not literally I might add.

* Sugar craft is the art of using sugar to create beautiful decorations mainly for decorating cakes for special occasions.

We'd like to thank Audrey again for taking the time to share her Obsession with us all! You can see more of her lovely work by visiting her Website.

ARIES:
You will want to share pleasurable activities with your mate or marriage partner during this time. Entertainment plans, such as going to the theater or a special night out on the town together, would be appealing to you now. This period also promotes feelings of loyalty, love, and contentment toward your loved one. When you lavish your attention on your mate, you most likely will receive a warm and affectionate response. With a fresh, playful approach you can enliven your marriage or a significant relationship at this time.
Taurus:

Your feelings of love may be somewhat reserved, modest, and unobtrusive at this time. Differences may develop over personal plans or financial affairs in a close association or romantic relationship. You might have to work extra hard when playing the role of peacekeeper or negotiator in solving problems with a lover, mate, or friend. It may help to relieve existing tension by discussing things on a less emotional level. At this time, you may feel that you do not have a clear understanding of where you stand with a partner or lover on important issues, such as financial, commitment, or security needs in the relationship. This can also be a difficult period for furthering creative plans and ventures. Close associates are not likely to be cooperative or you sense that your talents and abilities are going unnoticed.
Gemini:
Projects that have been in the planning stages can be successfully implemented or brought forth at this time. Creative and intellectual endeavors are favored now, and you will most likely gain the support and appreciation from important and influential people. New possibilities to link with others on a common goal may occur and would prove quite beneficial and productive now. You have more faith in your intuition and reasoning abilities, which keeps your focus clear and helps you avoid pitfalls. This is an excellent time to display your natural talents or artistic abilities to the public.
Cancer:
Small changes in your job routine are likely now. Although you may wish to stick with what has worked in the past, you may have to adhere to a different set of conditions. Try not to allow your ego get the best of you if a co-worker or superior upstages you in some manner or puts a cramp in your style. Keep an eye on someone who may be jealous of your successes or position. Carefully go over plans or work endeavors as they may backfire if you try too hard to make an impression on others. It is best not to force issues or create unnecessary conflict. Don't let such an exclusive focus on work cause other important areas of your life to suffer. Let a loved one or mate help lift your spirits.
Leo:
You can handle a great deal of work and responsibility, but it is apt to take its toll on your personal life and need for freedom. Professionals and influential persons in your work place may view you as a devoted and enthusiastic employee and therefore might overload you with additional work. Discord can arise in your private domain, especially if you have been avoiding your duties and obligations there. If a confrontation arises now, you are apt to overreact, thereby further alienating your loved ones through excessive involvement in your work. Although you feel more industrious, it is best not to promise more than you can deliver with regard to both work and personal relationships.
Virgo:
Unusual ventures, harebrained schemes, unexpected and serendipitous events which create the need for considerable adjustment on your part are indicated now. Whatever agenda you had planned is apt to be spontaneously disregarded for what may well be a better alternative. However, you are prone to be more than a little reckless now, so be certain you are not jeopardizing those areas of your life which are your support structure and which in fact enable you to experiment and do some of the wilder things you want to do. You may play the fool or the iconoclastic upstart in your environment, providing an opportunity for others to be more truthful, open, or creative. Be aware, however, that you could also be a scapegoat in that role.
Libra:
Your knowledge can help you attain job perfection at this time. You should use this period to build upon your technical or mental skills in your work routine, as your ability to concentrate and key in on your objectives is very concrete. You feel a need to express your dedication and commitment to your work endeavors or to your own personal goals and desires. You can plan your projects in an orderly, logical manner and focus your attention on the smallest of details. You are eager to communicate your ideas and opinions to the individuals that you work with. This can be quite a busy and fruitful period with meetings, phone calls and much on the agenda. Important news or information about your career directives or personal projects may come to you at this time.
Scorpio:
Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and you may be infatuated with someone you meet at this time, only to be disappointed later when you discover this person does not fulfill all of your expectations. You are simply not seeing people objectively now. Your imagination is very active and creative, however, and so is your yearning for something beautiful. The artist in you emerges, and your creations please and inspire you. An opportunity may arise for you to take pride in your partner's accomplishments and encourage their career endeavors. You enjoy whatever good fortune your mate or spouse brings to the relationship and lend full support toward their efforts. Benefits brought to you both at this time can be either stronger commitment, more stability in the relationship, or freedom from limitations in your career, thereby allowing more time to devote to maintaining equilibrium in your partnership.

Sagittarius:
Power struggles are likely to occur in your work environment. You may become so determined to accomplish your work objectives that you are apt to arouse negative reactions from individuals in your work place. If you undertake an important project, you will work with dedication, concentration and purpose. Even if you have to deal with coercive or manipulative people, you should strive to cooperate with your co-workers for the benefit of the group or organization. Otherwise, you might have to deal with angry, jealous or spiteful behavior directed toward you. You must also be aware that your own anger may be just below the surface, and it could take just a minor incident or disagreement at work to trigger your temper. On the other hand, compromise may be essential in your personal affairs, and it can be necessary to devote more effort into balancing both career and your primary relationships.
Capricorn:
Confidence in your work or mental capabilities may make you feel fearless, determined, and very industrious at this time. You are quick to grasp new ideas and can take resourceful action to pursue your ambitions. This is certainly not a time to sit back and wait for something to happen. Put your plans into motion and develop productive strategies in order to accomplish your objectives. Those in authority, executives, or colleagues are likely to be in approval of your intentions. You make well-informed decisions and choices and possess good reasoning skills with regard to new or current ventures during this period.

Aquarius:

Hard work is rewarding, rather than burdensome, for you at this time. You can apply steady effort and dedication to accomplishing your work duties and obligations without much difficulty. Authority figures and superiors are cooperative and helpful to you as they sense your ambitious and responsible attitude. If you have an opportunity to work in an administrative or executive position, your reputation will be highly respected. A methodical and mature approach to work will be likely and you will want to follow the proper guidelines and rules of your organization or work place. You will be especially good at completing projects or tasks which demand perseverance and determination.
Pisces:
This is a favorable period to clear away any imperfections in your work routines and endeavors. You may need a work environment free of distractions and chaos in order to work with more productivity and efficiency. If your creative energy and imagination is given room to flourish, then you will truly feel dedicated to your job responsibilities and duties. You may envision greater possibilities or yearn for idyllic work conditions where your dreams are automatically fulfilled. Since you are highly susceptible to the influence of others, you may be swayed by their ideas and schemes. If the plans and designs of other individuals are based in reality, you can benefit now from their inspirations. However, it is important that you discern between fact and fiction in your dealings with others.
