For every Home sold from now till Christmas of this year Rosewillow.ca will donate $10.00 to Heifer.org. All the information can be found at the Real Estate Office. This is a very worth while cause and if you remember the saying "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will have food for a lifetime". Do you need a little help in the mood swing department--spirits, do they need a little lifting--how about over coming stress, getting deeper restorative sleep, balancing the hormones and reducing headaches. Too good to be true? What about 5HTP it just might be the thing you need. 5HTP is a mood boosting plant extract--and amino acid, made from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia plant---a building block for serotonin, a chemical , technically a neurotransmitter used by the brain & nerve cells to communicate with each other also referred to as the “happy” hormone. Scientist believe that low levels of serotonin are responsible for depression and mood swings--migraines and possibly over eating. While anti-depressants work by keeping the serotonin levels in the body ~free~. H5TP assist the body in producing more serotonin, which in theory would help keep the free levels higher. Because it’s a natural amino acid other than a drug----5HTP isn’t accompanied by potentially harmful side effects. Initially our bodies produce serotonin, but sometimes due to stress and other outside influences the demand over run’s the supply---triggering all sorts of nasty symptoms like anxiety, insatiable appetite, weight gain, depression and uncontrollable cravings for sugar and starch. The reason we crave sugar and starch--- carbohydrate rich foods are the building blocks for serotonin, by way of increasing brain concentrations of the amino acid tryptophan. And even though eating simple processed carbohydrates can satisfy the cravings, when we indulge it creates feelings of calm, peace, satisfaction, an instant high energy boost, but as quickly the insulin level drops causing a rebound of anxiety and in many those sugar blues/ depression. This stimulates more simple carbohydrate cravings to get back to the initial high creating a vicious cycle of over indulgence…. Via of processing wholesome foods have been stripped of nutrients, when we over indulge we bulge by way of calories yet it leaves our bodies aching for more----because the refined carbohydrates are basically empty of vitamins and minerals. In my opinion and that of many healing experts, it’s better to feed the cravings with complex carbohydrates. Research indicates that eating complex carbohydrates like whole grains, whole grain rice, baked potatoes--baked sweet potatoes and fortified cereals are better than simple carbs because they haven‘t been stripped of nutrients to increase shelve life. They take longer to break down in the body therefore creating feelings of fullness, longer. And they generally contain less sugar which by passes the sugar buzz that quickly results in a nose dive by way of energy, often causing the sugar blues/depression/ energy drain. Still in this frazzled world where refined food is a staple and it seems we’ve become addicted to those sugar highs and the need to feed the cravings. It’s difficult to go cold-turkey without a little help from our friends. 5HTP could be the supplement you need to reduce those cravings giving our bodies and ourselves a boost in the just say NO department when it comes to over indulging via comfort junk food that can lead to obesity, depression, migraine headaches….a long melody of maladies. You might check out 5HTP=5-hydroxtrptophan. I take it and I feel its helped considerably. This information provided should not be considered as personal medical advice. Readers should do research and consult with appropriate healthcare practitioners on matters related to their personal health. Boji Stone

Making and selling beer in today’s competitive market is serious business. And well it should be because we all take our barley sandwiches very, very seriously. Don’t we? Well we have nothing on medieval Germany. It seems that in 1516, in the southern province of Germany known as Bavaria, the Dukes Wilhelm IV and Ludwig X actually passed a law that stated that the only ingredients that could be used in making beer was water, malted barley, hops and yeast. Well actually they didn’t know that yeast was a vital ingredient so the original law called for only water barley and hops. Right now all the ladies are rolling their eyes and the guys are making that fist pumping action normally reserved for sporting events. But there’s more to this than meets the eye. The Bavarian royal family owned a monopoly on barley so they didn’t want anyone cutting into their action with other cereal grains and sugars. Of course they spun their decision to sound as if they were preserving the purity of beer for the betterment of their loyal subjects. After all, using wheat for beer making (hefeweisen) was reserved for the ruling class so wasn’t something the chimney cleaners and farmers would be interested in anyway. So there was a law for the people that didn’t apply to the people making the law. Sound familiar? The Reinheitsgebot, the purity law, covered all of Germany when the provinces were united in 1871. Some limited commercial wheat beers were allowed in the nineteenth century but Reinheitsgebot was embraced by the people and remained in place until the 1980’s. With the advent of free trade in Europe, Germany’s purity law was seen as protectionist and successfully challenged by other nations who wanted to sell their beer in Germany. The biggest concern of the traditionalist beer drinkers did not materialize. They had expected a flood of what they called chemi-beer into the country. However, Germany is a capitalist society driven by supply and demand laws and the people remained loyal to the Reinheitsgebot. So despite the dissolution of the law, there remain many breweries who continue the old traditions without any fear of competition from the large macrobreweries. You might be thinking at this point that their choices might be severely limited if brewers can’t use anything other than the four approved ingredients. If so, you would be mistaken. The malting process can be tailored to produce malted barley that has hundreds of different properties that lend their own unique quality to the beer. When coupled with hundreds of different varieties of hops and yeast strains, and the combinations reach into the hundreds of thousands. In fact, everything from porters and stouts to Pilsners and clean lagers can be made in this fashion. There are only a few exceptions, such as many of the Belgian beers, that actually require certain spices and sugars to gain their distinctive profile. Today most of the popular beer makers do not follow the principles of Reinheitsgebot. They add adjuncts like corn and sugar to their beer to reduce the malt flavor and keep the alcohol content. If you’re looking for a pure beer, there are many imports that adhere to the purity principle but many local microbreweries do the same. For those of you purists who want to know if your beer is in the spirit of Reinheitsgebot, try this simple little test. Let your beer warm up to nearly room temperature and give it a try. Does it still taste good? It’s probably made mostly or entirely with malted barley. Taste terrible? Now you know why the big brewers are always telling you how good their beer tastes cold.
Prost!
Mothers day is this month for some of us. Make sure to mark May 11 on your calendar and do something special for your mom. A RoseWillow membership would be a great idea.. Yes we know, shameless self promotion. One of the earliest historical records of a society celebrating a Mother deity can be found among the ancient Egyptians, who held an annual festival to honor the goddess Isis, who was commonly regarded as the Mother of the pharaohs. The story goes, after Isis’ brother-husband Osiris was slain and dismembered in 13 pieces by their jealous brother Seth, Isis re-assembled Osiris’ body and used it to impregnate herself. (oh those Egyptians). She then gave birth to Horus, whom she was forced to hide amongst the reeds lest he be slaughtered by Seth. Horus grew up and defeated Seth, and then became the first ruler of a unified Egypt. Thus Isis earned her stature as the Mother of the pharaohs. Mothers day is celebrated in different ways in different countries at different times of the year! The table below explains a bit.
Your mother is always with you...
Unknown.. We here at RoseWillow would like to wish all you Moms, Moms to be Aunties, Grammas, and Friends a very happy Mothers Day!
Do you have your reusable grocery bags yet? If so GREAT!! If you make your own even BETTER!! But have you given consideration to the veggie bags? Hmmmm? Perhaps not and they aren't pushing those in the stores like they are the reusable grocery bags. They do weigh a tad, TAD bit more than the plastic bags BUT .. think about how many of those little bags you toss in the garbage after bringing home your veggies in ‘em. It’s staggering really. If you buy foods in bulk you use bags there too and let’s face it you usually transfer those bulk items into containers or jars once you get home. How bout make some reusable bags of your own instead? Don’t sew? Find a friend who can and make an afternoon of it. You can cut the material do pinning or ironing, they can sew. Invite others and tell them to bring their machines. Get an assembly line going. You will have bags for everyone. As I mentioned these are a tad bit more expensive than plastic shopping bags. Since things in these bags are usually weighed at the check out counter you will actually pay for the extra weight which really is minimal but in the long run you are saving our planet. It is quite possible to buy your veggies and Not bag them till you have had them run through the till if you’re really anal about the extra weight. Buy a few yards of light weight Unbleached Cotton, matching or colored thread for making the bags. Make some yarn drawstrings and you’re set! If you want the kids to join in buy some fabric paints and let them paint the bags (the paint will add to the weight of the bags remember). If you want some real funky looking veggie bags try TYE-DYE! . That’s great fun for everyone and won’t add as much weight as the fabric paints. You can also make these bags especially for the kids for gym clothes or lunch bags if they decorate it themselves they’ll have even more fun! Let them go wild! If you make tiny drawstring bags (about 3 inches square) and fill them with some activated charcoal , stick them in your crisper your veggies will last longer too! The charcoal absorbs the Ethylene gas given off by the rotting fruits and veggies. Ethylene gas (C2H4) is an odorless, colorless gas that exists in nature and is also created by man-made sources. Not easily detectable, it exists where produce is stored. In nature, the largest producers are plant and plant products (ie. fruits, vegetables and floral products) which produce ethylene within their tissues and release it into the surrounding atmosphere. Put a few in your fridge in different places they’ll absorb odors too! Every couple of months take out the charcoal and soak it in warm water.. rinse till the water runs clear and let dry well. To dry it a bit quicker bake in oven at about 350 degrees till it’s dry. Wash out your bag and refill it with the charcoal. The charcoal can be used about 4 times the bags will last a very long time. Personally I’d stick the old charcoal in bags and toss it in a cupboard full of stinky shoes. Every little bit helps. Now the only problem you probably will run into is the angry grocery store clerks who will have to open your bags to see what’s inside. TUFF. Let them get used to it! Perhaps you can not pull the strings tight till you actually pack your groceries or like I mentioned before leave the veggies out of the bags till they have been run through at the till. Or make the ones from old sheers then they'll be no problems. If you are like me and buy lots of food items in bulk use the bags for things like rice, pastas, popcorn, sunflower seeds etc. For powdered foods or spices try taking reusable plastic containers. Again you are paying for things by weight so this may cost you a few pennies BUT you are not tossing more plastic into the dumps. Take a marker with you and just mark the item number on the container. It’ll wash off when you have used the contents. This not only is a green way to shop but you can bring the containers home and stack them in your cupboards with out transferring the contents a second time! Once again this will probably tick them off at the till cause it’s something New.. but who knows it just may catch on. Wouldn’t it be great if you could earn green points or discounts if you brought your own containers!? This goes for Meat too. Take your container to the meat counter and tell them once the meat has been sliced and weighed you’d like it put into your container. Do make sure everything is meticulously clean before you hand it to the people behind the counter. They do not want anything contaminating their processing tables. Try to get away from Styrofoam trays. I’ll have some more on how to reuse those next time! We will be posting instructions this month on how to make your own reusable grocery and veggie bags over on the Green Space front page. If you’re interested in living Green visit us at RoseWillow’s Green Space! Post in the forum some of your Green living tips! See you there.

Here's a recipe for goin' campin'...or for anytime really.......
Individual bags of Nacho or Dorito chips
Slit the Nacho chip bag down the side lengthwise and break chips into smaller pieces
Eat on the go right out of the bag, no dishes to clean up other than the frying pan. My kids love this even if they are’nt on the go........and the best part is they can fix their own. I hadn't heard of this till we went camping last summer.....one of the other families was having them and my kids thought they were the cats' meow. For a variation to this instead of using hamburger you can use ground chicken.....it's just as good or even better.......

Have you been over to the RoseWillow Arts & Crafts Guild yet?
Is Blythe! We asked Blythe a few questions and here's what she had to tell us about her art. RWACGW: What is your main art of craft? Blythe: The basis of all I ever wanted to do is Painting and Art Restoration. I still do restoration from time to time but I find the creative draw is stronger in the past few years. I am also a Silver smith and love making native style jewelry.
Blythe: All of my life. I began restoration right out of school 30 years ago RWACG: Where did you learn and what attracted you to this art in the first place? Blythe: I went to University for a fine Arts Degree in Kansas and Houston School of Arts for my secondary degree in restoration. I was also awarded and understudy in France for restoration and dating of artwork in the 90's. RWACG: Where do you get most of your ideas? Blythe: Everywhere! Keeping myself exposed to what others are doing, gathering input, and drawing from emotions. RWACG: Where do you get most of your supplies? Blythe: Again, everywhere. I have several suppliers for silver stock, and I love shopping for unusual items in antique and thrift stores to utilities in Jewelry. Paints I can pick up through Blicks and I order a special portrait grade linen canvas from California RWACG: Do you find it’s an expensive craft? For instance if someone had the interest to do the jewelry you do. Blythe: I've never thought of the craft as the expense, but rather a choice. Do I wish to eat, or have a new dress, or do I wish to buy something to create with? ( I usually go with the creative process) In Jewelry, some of the tools can be a bit costly, in start up. But you can start painting with a cheap set of children’s watercolours or acrylics until you find your favorite medium. RWACG: Can you give me a quick step-by-step process to doing your jewelry or restoration work? Blythe: Usually I see a stone that will make something click and I draw out what I see as a semi-finished project. It will drive me nuts if I have to wait a few days to being any new project, like a hunger.
Restoration always begins with testing the age and medium of the project. RWACG: Do you sell your art? If so where? Blythe: I have two shops in Texas and one in Florida that sell my jewelry and have for many years. I have two galleries in California and one in Texas that I show regularly. Most of the art groups I belong to send out many publications on the call for artists.
RWACG: Approximately what would the finished cost of some of your items be? Blythe: A detailed silver pendant can start at 65.00 and run in to hundreds for a necklace.

DIVERSE ED Thanks to long-time reader (first-time asking) Margaret for the question! I think the issue of bad driving is one we cannot easily solve here. BUT, in my opinion, a great deal of world-harmony could be managed by proper use of the turn-signal. The worst and most-recurrent horrors of traffic come down to that - we all learned those bicycle signals - arm out for a left, bent-up for a right-turn, down to stop. Modern cars have largely replaced those with flashers and brake-lights, but modern drivers have forgotten what they're FOR! The idea is to signal what you will be doing - NOT justification for why you have suddenly stopped! If I could bestow only ONE thing on other drivers, I think I would be that IF turning, your signal should come BEFORE your brakelights or slowing - with the arguable exception of out-of-towners. The turn signal is not to declare you are now-turning, it is meant to announce you WILL BE turning, ahead of time. Throwing it abruptly blinking does not give you any "right" to suddenly turn left, either. Ed
