According to an article I read some time ago, a French mathematician and philosopher of the 17th century by the name of Rene Descartes perpetuated the division of mind and body, which eventually would be known as the Western philosophy of mind-body dualism. Eastern mystics however, contemplating a similar notion of inner workings, arrived at an opposite conclusion. They believed/believe the mind/body is an entity in an indivisible continuum. In other words, the mind, our thoughts, are not separate from the body. They are one. In the past scientist and doctors were inclined to dismiss the Eastern philosophy but the more they've learned about the intricate details and workings of the mind ---that which makes us tick , many have come to believe the Eastern way of thinking could definitely have merit. Today many psychologist and neurologists of the mind and body agree there is little difference between the two, the mind and the body are connected, a part of the whole. The brain is an organ just like the heart and kidneys, more complicated certainly, but never the less an organ. Our thoughts and emotions are electrochemical interactions within and between nerve cells. The imaginary voices heard by those suffering from schizophrenia and the feelings of worthlessness and self hate experienced by the clinically depressed are distorted brain electro chemistry. Numerous Scientist are declaring that not only is the brain similar to the rest of the body, the well being of one is connected to the other. A healthy body contributes to a healthy mind, and vice versa. Our thoughts affect our bodies and the health of our body affects our minds, which in turn affects our thoughts. WE not only need to think positive to be healthy, but when we have a healthy body, mind, soul, we'll automatically think more positively.

My maternal grandparents immigrated from England to Canada in 1914. As I got older I was fascinated with England and when I finally could I traveled there. This has turned into many trips to this country. I have relatives there and most live in Devonshire, known for its thatched roof cottages. One aunt lives in one of these cottages in a very quaint village, with a huge church in the middle, some grand homes and dotted throughout by thatched cottages. I can just see the following letter being sent to someone in this village.
My Dear Miss, I now take up my pen to write to you hoping these few lines will find you well as it leaves me at present Thank God for it. You will perhaps be surprised that I should make so bold as to write to you who is such a lady and I hope you will not be vex at me for it. I hardly dare say what I want, I am so timid about ladies, and my heart trimmels like a hespin. But I once seed in a book that faint heart never won fair lady, so here goes. I am a farmer in a small way and my age is rather more than forty years and my mother lives with me and keeps my house, and she has been very poorly lately and cannot stir about much and I think I should be more comfortabler with a wife. I have had my eye on you a long time and I think you are a very nice young woman and one that would make me happy if only you think so. We keep a servant girl to milk three kye and do the work in the house, and she goes on a bit in the summer to gadder wickens and she snags a few turnips in the back kend. I do a piece of work on the farm myself and attends Pately Market, and I sometimes show a few sheep and I feeds between 3 & 4 pigs agen Christmas, and the same is very useful in the house to make pies and cakes and so forth, and I sells the hams to help pay for the barley meal. I have about 73 pund in Naisbro Bank and we have a nice little parlour downstairs with a blue carpet, and an oven on the side of the fireplace and the old woman on the other side smoking. The Golden Rules claimed up on the walls above the long settle, and you could sit all day in the easy chair and knit and mend my kytles and leggums, and you could make the tea ready agin I come in, and you could make butter for Pately Market, and I would drive you to church every Sunday in the spring cart, and I would do all that bees in my power to make you happy. So I hope to hear from you. I am in desprit and Yurnest, and will marry you at May Day, or if my mother dies afore I shall want you afore. If only you will accept of me, my dear, we could be very happy together. I hope you will let me know your mind by return of post, and if you are favourable I will come up to scratch. So no more at present from your well wisher and true love. Simon Fallowfield P.S. I hope you will say nothing about this. If you will not accept of me I have another very nice woman in my eye, and I think I shall marry her if you do not accept of me, but I thought you would suit me mother better, she being very crusty at times. So I tell you now before you come, she will be Maister. THIS PROPOSAL WAS REFUSED BY MARY FOSTER Hannah
People have been homebrewing their own beer since, well, since beer began. Often the lady of the house was responsible for brewing the beer and a girl’s skills could be coveted by potential suitors looking for a bride. These early brewers made their beer from scratch, of course, but today we have some other options. I will be writing a series of articles about three different types of homebrewing: pre-hopped extract, extract with steeping grains (including mini-mash) and all grain brewing. Today we start the series with pre-hopped extracts. One of the most popular forms of homebrew kits are the pre-hopped can kits. These kits come in many forms themselves but for the most part tend to be complete with the exception of the addition of corn sugar (dextrose), and water. With these kits, the barley has already been mashed, boiled, and has had the hops added to it. Often called ‘no boil’ kits, it can actually be disadvantageous to boil these types because you may wind up driving off volatile hop oils present in the extract. The instructions that come with your kit will let you know if you should boil the malt or not. Basically, you add the contents of the can to some room temperature water, stir, add the corn sugar, stir some more, then sprinkle your yeast on top. Very simple, very quick. The drawback is that they don’t make very good beer. First of all, you’re stuck with whatever the manufacturer had in mind as far as hops go. You can’t add more or less, or tailor your hop additions to give you more aroma, flavor or bitterness unless you modify the kit by adding your own. In that case, you’d have to know quite a bit about what is in the kit already and you would have to have considerable knowledge about hops and how to use them. If that was the case, you probably wouldn’t be using a pre-hopped kit anyway. The addition of large quantities of dextrose to the wort is done to increase the amount of fermentables in the mix. This serves as a cheap means to increase the alcohol but sacrifices flavor. Fermented dextrose has a fruity flavor that doesn’t really belong in beer. The good news is that you don’t HAVE to use dextrose. Instead, pick up some unhopped liquid malt extract and substitute it pound for pound for the sugar. It will still supply almost the same amount of fermentables, but instead of adding fruity off-tastes and reducing the malt flavor, you will get a tastier, fuller bodied beer. Another drawback of these kits is simply that they ARE no-boil. In the homebrewing community, sanitation is vital. Because boiling of the wort is often required, anything that handles the beer prior to the boil does not need to be sanitized. The boiling will sanitize the wort for us. With no boil kits we don’t have that luxury. In fact, unless your water supply is exceptionally clean, it is recommended that you boil and then cool the water you use to mix in your pre-hopped extract. If you don’t want to boil your water, you can buy reverse osmosis or even distilled water. While it’s true that good beer requires proper minerals in the brewing water, the kit itself will contain the minerals from the manufacturer’s water. If your water has an excess of certain minerals you might want to consider this. Not all kits require dextrose. To determine if you need dextrose without pulling out the instructions for a kit, just check the weight of it. If the can contains 3.3 - 4 lbs of extract, you’re going to need dextrose or additional liquid malt extract. If the kit contains 5 lbs and is a light beer, it likely doesn’t. For a medium strength and body beer you would need 6 - 7 lbs and for a strong and heavy beer you would need at least 8 lbs of malt. By the way, if you do decide to substitute malt extract for dextrose, and I highly recommend you do, you only need to add light malt extract. All the color and flavor is already present in the kit, even for darker stouts. Because of the various manufacturers of kits, procedures and ingredients can vary widely. Be sure to check your instructions and make your brew according to what the manufacturer states. Above all, be patient! Good beer takes time and patience. Happy brewing!

Send an E-GREETING! I’ve never been much of a card sender. I hardly ever will buy a greeting card for any occasion. Christmas time I cut tags from matching gift wrap or just write names strait onto the boxes in marker. It’s what’s inside that counts right? *S*. Never did send out Christmas cards either cause half the time I’d find them in a drawer in June and swear up down and sideways I’d mail them next Christmas.. but then wonder if I put a note in them that might not exactly be appropriate for the coming Christmas. That and my spelling , grammar and handwriting are atrocious. But I must say I an always quick to answer emails (one has to love spell checkers!) and I do enjoy sending email greeting cards from time to time. More and more people own computers and are connected to the internet. It makes good Green sense to send e-cards too. The benefits are quite obvious
-No trees are harmed in e-greetings
And if you need some more facts
-The pulp and paper industry is the fourth highest user of electricity, accounting for 6% of the nation's total demand.
You can send e greetings regularly for every occasion or just… because! RoseWillows new E-greeting site will have all kinds of fun features for members. Members will have their own address books, calendar and email reminders. You’ll be able to upload your own Photos, Music, Recorded Voice Messages, or Poetry. You can add special effects to your cards. I’m just touching on a few of the features of this site. If the site proves to be popular we’ll be adding even more features to it in the future. I do hope you’ll all give it a test run and if you like RoseWillow e-greetings you’ll let your friends know how to find us! We have a bit more to do setting up the new site but will be opening it to everyone very soon so keep an eye out for the announcement!
If you’re interested in living Green visit us at RoseWillow’s Green Space! Post in the forum some of your Green living tips! See you there.
DIVERSE ED Mrs Gladys Freebottom, of Wawa, Ontario writes: "My husband went to the store for a carton of milk in January, and he hasn't been back since." I'm glad you asked this, Gladys, because it raises a significant difference in traffic you have to look out for. Last month we talked about the *distracted* driver, but you raise the question of the absent-minded driver as well. These are NOT the same, and you have to beware them differently. It's the absent-minded driver who may leave his blinker on for miles, or sit blithely in the passing-lane with her cruise-control a fraction/hour above the traffic. The distracted driver is talking or watching, and may speed up or slow down as different interest take her, or drift between lanes if there are cows or a curious house along the way; the absent-minded driver is constantly so. As you point out, it may be difficult to distinguish, but they ARE different beasts. The crucial thing to remember is to treat them the same: these are people you do not want to be driving near if you can help it! The two ways to distance yourself from bad drivers are to pass them, or to drop-back. Generally speaking, I'd recommend passing the absent-minded, but possibly dropping-back to keep a distance from the distracted - as you would the idiot speed-jockeys, who think they've won to be ahead of you...when you're both at the next stoplight. I would say...
Well, it seems the publisher has decided this is not a good-enough I guess it's like a drive, in all. How long it takes matters FAR less than getting there. On the highway or in town, moving is the best you can do - even when it's slow. Ask yourself this - would you rather be a few minutes late, or in an accident? Remember the big picture: if you left late, driving is a poor way to try to make-up time. And "defensive-driving" is a must, my friends! It's not how good you are that matters, it's how bad the *other* people might you have to watch out for. On a final note, my thanks again to Gladys - and be sure to check the date on that milk, when hubby finally gets back! Ed
- (China) In a stunning development, the Chinese government reversed their long-standing one-child-only plan. Believed by many to have discouraged or devalued girl-babies, the strict old policy was finally set aside. According to party officials, couples will no longer be penalized for having a second or even third child adopted by Angelina Jolie. - (Australia) Recent polls suggest Australia has overtaken the USA as the world's "most obese" country. According to unofficial spokesman Neddy McPunchy, "hey mate, we're not just big down-under anymore". Neddy denied unconfirmed reports that Australian natives are now more likely to carry jars of gravy than vegemite in their pouches. - (Canada) Following the "resignation" of Maxime Bernier, after allegations he left sensitive government documents in the home of his putative girlfriend (the suddenly infamous Marie Coulliard, alleged to have long and deep ties to the Hell's Angels and other biker-gangs), Prime Minister Stephen Harper has shuffled the Cabinet. Newly selected for that top Cabinet post is David Emerson, who was elected as a Liberal, but jumped to Harper's Conservatives immediately after the election, in exchange for a (then-lesser) Cabinet post. It is not known whether Emerson may switch parties again, on learning Ms Couillard does come with the job... however, the CBC has confirmed it will constantly repeat the same footage of her cleavage, for any event even remotely connected to these events. - (China) Champion distance runner Haile Gebrselassie of Ethopia may not run in the upcoming Olympic marathon. Gebrselassie, an asthmatic, has cited the levels of air pollution as a concern. Chinese officials dismiss any concerns, and prepared a cubic metre of "typical" Beijing air for testing purposes, scoffing it took only three men to lift it into the truck to the lab.

Happy INDEPENDENCE DAY! July 4th.
BBQ Sauce
-1 med size bottle of ketchup (approx 1 liter/quart)
Mix powdered spices with liquid smoke into a paste. Thin it down with a bit of vinegar to make it smooth then add to the ketchup and molasses. Stir well and let sit over night so flavors have time to marinate.
This sauce is also good for ribs, steak or anything done on the bbq. It can be used with out cooking for a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets or fondue meats etc.
For your Skewers
I have not given exact amounts for the skewer pieces. You can decide on how many folks you’ll be serving. Figure on about 3 skewers per person.
Use about 12 inch wood skewers. They can be bought at any grocery store. It is recommended that you soak them in water over night so they don’t burn on the grill but I never do and have really not had any catch fire or burn.
Here’s some of the things you can put on them.
-Cut into bite size cubes Pork, Beef and Chicken pieces.
EnJoy!
Have you been over to the RoseWillow Arts & Crafts Guild yet?
Is Autumne! We’d like to introduce everyone to another one of our amazing artists here at RoseWillow. Autumne! We asked Autumne a few questions. Let’s hear about more about her talents.
Autumne: Maryland. I've been doing crafts in one form or another for most of my life (don't ask!) I've been teaching decorative painting for 6 years and LOVE it!. I can remember my first grade teacher, Miss Straser, asking us to paint a self portrait in class. I painted myself at a blackboard with a ruler in my hand, teaching. Who knew that *mumblemumble* years later, I'd actually be a painting instructor?
Currently, except for one show I do in the fall, my 'crafting' has gone by the wayside. I've found teaching more rewarding (and profitable), however, when I did crafts, my projects almost always incorporated some form of decorative painting. My best seller was (and still is) my hand painted wine bottles with lights. Each winter holiday, I paint a different design. Last year's design was a penguin and snowman standing in front of pine trees. I've got 'regulars' who come to me every year to purchase the latest design.
Autumne: Yes, yes, and yes. I started with books and videos and took 2 decorative painting classes at a nearby craft store about 8 years ago. It really snowballed from there. I developed a website to show family and friends some of the items I'd painted and sold at craft shows and received a phone call one day from Plaid Enterprises (they're a nationwide distributor of acrylic paints and artist products). Plaid needed someone to do the painting demo at a grand opening for a new Michaels opening nearby. They had called and asked the instructor. I had taken my 2 classes from a couple years before but she had a scheduling conflict and couldn't do the demo that day. She referred them to my website and recommended me. I said 'You want to PAY me to stand there and paint for 3 hours?' (I thought they were kidding!) The day after the demo, they called me again and asked if I would take the painting instructor job in the new store. I became a certified instructor in 2004 and am a member of the Society of Decorative Painters.
RWACG: Have you sold your items?
Autumne: Many, many! RWACG: Can you give price ranges of the items? Autumne: I currently only do one show a year now. (Did I mention I also work fulltime at a university?) I try and have a basket of $1.00 hand painted jingle bells for children to purchase (they love to shop and buy something special!). Generally my items are priced between $20-$50 and I don't usually have anything in my display for more than $75.00 although I'll take special orders for custom gifts and walls/murals. RWACG: Do you give lots of your work for gifts? Autumne: I do. But I usually invite my family/friends to walk through my house and select what they'd like to have.
AUTUMNE: Yes, I entered a county fair with a very old wooden telephone stand I bought at a yard sale for $4.00 and painted ivory with pink roses and lace. (I eventually sold that stand for $50). RWACG: Have you won? Autumne: Yes, I took the blue ribbon for that table. My boss' wife called me and asked if I painted because she was looking at a table at the county fair painted by someone with the same name and it had been given a blue ribbon. (Nice surprise!!!)
Autumne: Painting is probably the least expensive hobby! Water-based acrylic paints can be purchased for $1 a bottle. Of course, I do have over 500 bottles of paint. (*yikes* Did I really admit to that?).
Autumne:
Nope. Paint and brushes, that about sums up your supply list.
.
RWACG: Your crafting area.. Do you set up at the kitchen table or do you have a designated area in your home? Autumne: I have sent a photo of my work area.
Thank you Autumne for taking the time to tell us about yourself and your crafts. Everything is just lovely.
What are your talents? Do you Paint? Sew? Scrapbook? Perhaps you are a Ceramist? Potter? Jewlery? Knitter? How about Photography?
Sculptor? Do you make Soap? Candles? or Paper? TELL US ABOUT IT!
We're looking for contributors and Artists and Crafter to feature. If you have an talent we can showcase please contact Kimberleyrose.
We would also like you to submit photos or instructions on arts and crafts others can do. The Craft Chat at the RoseWillow Arts and Crafts Guild is open to everyone too, so come on in and make yourself at home!
Aries:
Increased sensitivity to everything in your environment can leave you open to being contaminated by outside energies or pollutants. Therefore, choose your surroundings and those influences you expose yourself to carefully. This is applicable on many levels. People with less than honorable motives, tricksters or hustlers, may try to take advantage of you. Psychologically, you may become aware of other troubles and feel them within yourself. A compromised immune system can react strongly to any chemicals you ingest or otherwise take in. You may simply feel less vigorous, more passive, and in need of more rest and peace.
Gemini: This is a time to rely only on yourself and your own resources, gather in your scattered forces, and concentrate on your own work. You may meet numerous obstructions and delays so that you don't accomplish as much or work as quickly as you would like. You can, however, do a very thorough job and also tackle the kind of difficult or disagreeable tasks you usually avoid. You are prone to feel frustrated and to resent the limitations or drudgery of this time period. Perseverance and patient effort are required of you now. Try to avoid becoming discouraged or lashing out at the ones you are responsible for. Cancer: You take a more relaxed and creative approach to life now, and you are likely to take the time to enjoy a hobby or activity that you have not made enough room for in your life. Let this inclination grow and develop during this time period. This is a good time for invigorating, but not overly strenuous, outdoor activity. Your health is robust now, and this can be a good time for rejuvenation. Activities like golf, swimming, or hiking are very enjoyable now. Leo: Your desire for leadership, personal recognition for your efforts, and absolute control over your own affairs is very strong now. You are very competitive in business affairs and you aggressively present your concerns and interests to colleagues and superiors. Anger over an inability to be first or to be on top is quite possible, but you won't take it lying down. You are ready to fight if necessary in order to forge ahead! At this time you must guard against being too aggressive, coming on too strong, or trying to force your own will and thereby arousing hostility in others. Virgo: Getting what you really want and moving toward achieving the things which are important to you may involve surrendering something or eliminating something from your life at this time. Perhaps an attitude, a situation, or an attachment that has been impeding you is now released. You feel free to concentrate on the things that are most important to you now. Major, long-term changes can be successfully begun now - a lifestyle change or a regimen of self-improvement, for instance. Libra: Cooperation and successful collaboration in the business and professional world are highlighted now. Legal matters and governmental matters of all kinds run very smoothly now. If you are involved in any legal disputes or involvements with government agencies, this is a time when a successful resolution can be reached. This is a good time to bring about increased harmony and cooperation in any organization, club, or business of which you are a part. Scorpio: Your imagination runs wild during this time period! You are attracted to any kind of fantasy, mysticism, or imaginative work. Of course, the extent to which this affects you and the precise ways it manifests depends largely on your own personal tastes and inclinations in these matters. But regardless of your temperament, your imagination will soar at this time. Many people find that they simply must travel under this astrological influence. The same, everyday environment and routine is exceedingly irksome, and a more exotic, imaginative setting is needed. Sagittarius: Spontaneity and freedom are the key issues during this time period. Your mood is very upbeat. You are funny, somewhat eccentric, and you will sometimes act out of character. All of this is simply because you are less inhibited and cautious than usual, and you feel good. Dry or tedious activities are not for you. You will simply not tolerate a boring time, even if it means being a little rude. You will find something more entertaining to do, and be glad that you did. This is a happy time for you, and you may feel like you have just been let out of prison. Capricorn: You are in a jovial and fun-loving mood during this time period. You are likely to enjoy a wonderful time at a party and take part in entertaining social events. You can expect lots of laughter, jokes, and happy times with others during this period. You are likely to put chores and other responsibilities off for another day. This may annoy your spouse or other family members. Your desire to socialize and have a good time can easily clash with others' desires to have you do the work that they expect of you. Aquarius: You express your feelings openly and warmly, and others enjoy your company. You are also generous, and you may buy an expensive gift for someone. The reverse is also true, and you may receive a large or expensive gift at this time. If others can share in your good mood, then all goes well and you share a happy time together. You will spend a lot of money at this time, buying things of high quality. You also are likely to indulge in rich foods and may find that a little extra will power is needed to control your appetite for sweets or rich foods. Pisces: You are willfully resistant to any outside pressure, manipulation, or authority at this time. A fateful encounter with an adversary, one that can neither be avoided nor ignored, is indicated. You seesaw between taking forthright, direct action and using more covert, subtle methods. A desire to break down, destroy, or overthrow existing conditions is also a part of the picture. Be careful with sharp instruments or glass. You are very bold and adventurous right now and you cannot tolerate delays, restrictions, or any form of authority that prevents you from behaving exactly as you please. Your drive for personal freedom and insistence on your rights is pressing, and a confrontation in which you have to stand up for yourself is likely. -Deborah Browning
